Is Micardis Taken For Blood Pressure A Statin?

My question is: is the blood pressure medication I take, called Micardis (Telmisartin) a statin? There has been much adverse publicity, particularly a tv programme aired in Australia last year, about statins, and this has led to a large number of people ceasing taking statins. I have no idea if what I take is a statin. Thank you. Irene Sourgnes

Hi,

Micardis is the brand name of the drug called Telmisartan which is Angiotensin II receptor blocker helps to reduce blood pressure. It does not belong to statin group of drugs. Micardis is prescribed in moderate to high blood pressure which on persistence cause damage to the blood vessels of the brain, heart and kidney.

Thus the drug reduces the chances of stroke, heart attack, kidney failure and also blindness. Telmisartan acts by blocking the action of the chemical Angiotensin II to act on their receptors which constricts the blood vessels and increase the blood pressure. Side effects of the drug are dizziness, lightheadedness, etc.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
