Is Norethisterone Advisable For Women With Irregular Periods?

Hi,..I m 27 years old and trying to be pregnant..my period has been absent for about 10 months.. My doctor prescribed Norethisterone 5mg 3 times daily for two months and said it will result in period.. Should I continue to take it for two months continuously and then wait for period to occur, or should I take it for 1 month and stop to expect a period.?

Hi

Norethisterone is a derivative of female hormone, progesterone. This drug is generally used to delay periods, correct irregular periods and also to reduce excess bleeding by balancing your hormones.

This drug is generally given for 10 to 15 days. After stopping the drug, withdrawal bleed occurs in 5 to 7 days.

Since you have mentioned absent period for more than 10 months, you have been advised to take the hormonal pill for 2 months.

Hence I would suggest you to take the drug for 2 months and expect your withdrawal bleeding after this time.

Reducing the duration of drug intake can prevent your bleeding to occur. Also the cause of such long term delay in periods indicate hormonal imbalance and the cause should be identified.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
