Is Parkinson S A Hereditary Disease?

Hi Doc: Question. Is Parkinson s hereditary? My dad had it and I have noticed some symptoms I remember him having. At rest tremors of the hands (once in a while right now); rigidity in my feet (comes and goes). I am also diabetic (moderately controlled - Levimir, Metformin) and have HBP (well controlled). Heart is in very good condition, verified by cardiologist. Your thoughts appreciated.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Parkinson's disease may be either hereditary, meaning it is caused by genetic factors, or sporadic, meaning it is caused by environmental factors.

In most cases, Parkinson is not hereditary nor directly inherited, and only 15 to 25 percent of Parkinson's patients have a family history.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Blerina Pasho, General & Family Physician
