Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My granddaughter (15) was put on Prozac (40 mg.) to control anxiety. It caused manic and depersonalization and social disinhibition. Now they want to take her off Prozac and put her on Lithium. I am concerned and believe they should just take her off Prozac and identify how severe the anxiety is before trying to control the mania (which I believe is a side effect of Prozac) and put her on another drug.
Prozac is used for treating depression. Mania and depression both if present than suggestive of bipolar mood disorder that is treated by lithium carbonate drug Along with medication behavioral therapy. Also beneficial, yoga and daily exercise useful in such issue If depress severe with suicidal tendency than ECT like therapy can be given Just take care not to stop drug without doctor advise. Consult psychiatrist for detail clinical history, examination and counseling session.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
