Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Is A Stent Advisable When Suffering From 8mm Stone In Kidney?
I am active, healthy 32 year old with an 8mm stone in my left kidney, no previous UTI or kidney issues previously. I am scheduled in two weeks to go in for ESWL which I am okay with but they also want to put a stent in as a precaution for remaining pieces of the stone to pass. I am feeling like the stent is an aggressive pro active option and am very much opposed to anything foreign that could cause infection, pain. My question is, is this becoming just a medical standard for preventative issues in which case what are your thoughts of me saying no and taking chances of possible issues.
I can understand your worries regarding stent placement but trust me, I see many cases daily where stent serves the purpose of removal of remaining stone pieces and prevention of obstruction. I do accept it's a pro active measure but pain and infection rates are very very low and the benefits of stent placement outweigh the adverse effects. You don't need to take chances when preventive measures are readily available.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
