Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am a 44 year old female, and I have been diagnosed with an enlarged thymus but I m asymptomatic. Other than the scan that found this (from an unrelated incident) I have had no other tests. Today a cardiothoracic surgeon recommended removal. Is this surgery really necessary even though I have no symptoms?
USUALLY IN ADULTS ENLARGED THYMUS IS A RESULT OF AUTOIMMUNE CONDITION IN WHICH AUTOANTIBODIES START FORMING RESULTING IN DECREASED TRANSMISSION OF NERVE IMPULSES ALONG THE NERVE JUNCTIONS,SUBSEQUENTLY RESPONSIBLE FOR THE WEAKNESS OF VARIOUS MUSCLE GROUPS INCLUDING REPIRATORY,PROTOTYPE DISEASE IS MYASTHENIA GRAVES.SO IF A PATIENT IS ASYMPTOMATIC THEN THE PROCEDURE CAN BE DELAYED WITH CAREFUL FOLLOW UO CHECK-UP TO AVOID ANY DISASTROUS MEDICAL CONDITIONS.
