Is A Surgery Required For The Hole In The Ear Drum?

My 18 yr old son wiped out while tubing on a lake 2 days ago. He does have a relatively small hole in the middle of his eardrum (I have an otoscope). Will this heal up or will he require surgery. He has kept a clove of garlic (to prevent infection) and a piece of cotton (to prevent air) and kept water away from it.

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns...

As per your complain it seems that your son has suffered from a traumatic injury leading to ear drum perforation and in case if the perforation is small it generally heals with medications..

But you should consult an Otolaryngologist and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and investigations like otoscopy will be done for confirmation..

He can be advised a course of antibiotics, anti inflammatory painkiller and decongestant nasal drops for faster resolution of the perforation..

In case if the perforation does not shows signs of healing in 2 to 3 weeks then surgical repair of the eardrum can be done by Tympanoplasty..

You should also avoid excessive water exposure to the ears..
Limit excessive exposure to loud sounds..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards..
