Is A Tender, Swollen Vein Protruding Under The Arm A Cause For Concern?

I have a noticeable vein sticking out under my arm with tenderness and minor swelling down back of arm to elbow. I have had lymphodema and blood clots in same arm before due to chemo and lymph node removal. Pain has been about 3 weeks. Visual vein about 3 days. Should I be concerned?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
Thank you for your query.

Your symptoms are suggestive of obstruction in blood flow or local inflammatory process (thrombophlebitis).

I would:
-clinically examine you for the above
- get an angiography and venography imaging to look for obstruction.

I strongly recommend that you see your doctor/vascular surgeon right away.
In the meantime,
- avoid sleeping on that side
- avoid lifting weights or repetitive activity like typing, cutting, driving
- keep arm Slightly above shoulder level
-avoid long warm baths or massages or exercises
If you experience any numbness or pale /cold hands /arms, go to the ER.

Hope this helps.
Please let me know if I can help you with anything else.

Wish you good health
