Is Abdominal Distention Common While Suffering From Shingles?
Is one side abdominal distention after shingles common? My shingles outbreak has been diagnosed as a bad case. The rash started at my spine about waiste level extending about 6 wide and in a belt like pattern to my belly button. The stomach distention has been present since less than a week into shingles outbreak. I was originally diagnosed in urgent care and given 7 days of Valtrex and then I have since had 2 follow up visits with my internist. I have had pain in the entire belt infected distended area. A CT scan is being ordered. In my research, this distention resolves itself within a few months. Should I get a second opinion from a neurologist, get the CT scan or see if it resolves? I m on Tramadol and Tylenol for pain.
The abdominal bloating can be secondary to the herpes or it may be because of the heavy dosage of steroids, antiviral and pain killers too. If you feel it after two weeks you may a consultation from nephrologist as well as neurologist. If the Dr feels there are symptoms of asites they will themselves take care of extra fluid. During mean time you need to be in consultation with Gastroenterlogist.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Muzaffer Hussain Parray,
