Is Abilify A Generic Substitute For Deplin?

Deplin 29 year old, female, 5'3", 140 lbs.Prozac 20 mg qd, deplin 15 mg qd, mirena iud. My ob/gyn combined deplin with my prozac 2 months ago. I was having a 3 day stint of terrible pms....gloom and doom, zero energy, loss of appetite, sad with no apparent reason, weak. I could not tell if deplin worked, but have experienced the same awful feeling roughly 4 weeks later for 3-4 days at a time. Deplin is not covered by insurance and the generic is nearly $100 a month. I simply cannot afford that. My pharmacist suggeated Abilify. Does this medicine do the same as deplin? I would prefer to not take anything at all, but certainly do not care to feel so depressed. Thank you for any insight you may offer. -whitney

Hello and welcome to Healthcare Magic. Thanks for your query.

The symptoms that you have described are suggestive of Depression. Prozac (Fluoxetine) is an anti-depressant medication used to treat depression.

Regarding Deplin, this is a nutritional supplement containing L-methylfolate, the active dietary form of the vitamin B9 (folate). Abilify (Aripiprazole) is an anti-psychotic medication used to treat psychotic disorders. It is not the equivalent or substitute for Deplin. It is entirely different. I'm not sure why your pharmacist has suggested this medication.

I would advise you not to take or change any medication without a doctor's consultation. So, please discuss with your doctor before you change or start any new medication.

Wish you all the best.
