Is Abnormal Levels Of Thyroid Caused By The Anterior Cervical Fusion Surgery?
I had an anterior cervical fusion of c5-6 c6-7 in March. In early Oct I was diagnosed with slightly inactive thyroid and was put on Synthroid 0.05 mcq. Today I had new blood work and my thyroid is worse. Can this be related to the surgery? and will it subside at some point?
Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM! I read your query and understood your concern. The intervention you have done does not affect the function of thyroid gland. The cause of the under active thyroid in most of the cases is an autoimmune process that destroys the gland and lowers its function. At this point you have to take the hormones orally to substitute the function of the thyroid. It is a chronic disease and the treatment is life long. After starting synthroid you have to check regularly the hormonal level in order to see if the dose you are taking is the right one. From you report results that the dose you are taking actually is not enough and you have to raise the dose. There is nothing to worry about or to think that things are getting worse. Hope i was clear and helpful.
Kind regards, Dr.Mirjeta
