Is An Enlarged Thymus Gland A Cause For Concern?

Hi, I am a 33 year old female. I had a CT scan done do to a.chest infection. They ended up finding a prominent thymus. It said it can not rule out thymic neoplasm. My primary care doctor wouldn t elaborate anything to eliminate my fear of the finding, she is sending me to a cardiothorasic surgeon. My question is, can I have a enlarged thymus gland without it being anything dangerous?? I have two children that need me, and I am very worried. My doctor just wouldn t tell me anything.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

You might be having a condition called or thymoma. It is a benign (non-cancerous) and does not cause much problem and only close monitoring is required.

If you develop symptoms like chest pain or breathlessness, surgical removal may be required.

Consult a thoracic surgeon and he will direct you accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
