Is Antibiotics Advisable To Treat Infection In The Finger?

A couple of weeks ago, I was poked by a Christmas tree ornament hook, two weeks later my finger began to grow extra layer of skin around wound, I went to my PCP she told me that my finger was infected and that there was nothing inside of my finger, she told me to take antibiotics 4 times a day for 5 days. I notice on the 3rd day there was a small hole that was opening on my finger in the middle of the wound, and it hurt so bad to the touch, it felt like an ingrown nail, so I started using double antibiotic ointment, its starting to feel better, should I be using the antibiotic on my finger?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
Make sure you take the antibiotic by mouth that you were given. It is fine to use the topical antibiotic ointment. But if it is continuing to be swollen, red and hot then you need to go back to the doctor and have them take another look.
Regards
