Is Athletics Advisable For A Child With Aortic Root Dilatation?

My 13 year old son was just diagnosed with aortic root dilation. He is an athlete and lives to play basketball, soccer, cross country, and track. They are telling us no strenuous activity. This is life changing and devastating news for a child like mine.

Hi,

Aortic root dilatation is a condition in which the aorta, the largest artery in the body, becomes enlarged. This can put the person at risk for aortic dissection or rupture, which can be life-threatening. The degree of risk depends on the size of the dilation, the underlying cause of the dilation, and other factors such as the family history of aortic disease.

Given the potential risks associated with aortic root dilation, it is generally advisable for individuals with this condition to avoid strenuous activities that may increase blood pressure or heart rate, as these can put additional stress on the aorta. This may include activities such as high-impact sports, weightlifting, or activities that involve sudden or intense exertion.

However, the specific recommendations for physical activity will depend on the individual case and should be made in consultation with a healthcare professional who is familiar with the individual's medical history and condition. Some individuals with aortic root dilatation may be able to engage in low-impact activities such as swimming, cycling, or walking, while others may need to avoid all physical activity until the dilation is stabilized or repaired.

Your son needs to continue to follow up with his healthcare provider and to adhere to any recommendations regarding physical activity or other lifestyle modifications. It is also important to provide emotional support and to help him find alternative activities or hobbies that he enjoys and that are safe for his condition.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
