Is Blood In Stools Related To The Ovarian Cyst That Is Growing?

I have a right ovarian cyst. Severe pain started 1 week ago today. Had CT followed by Pelvic Ultrasound 4 days later that indicated the cyst was growing. Had hysterectomy 3 years ago leaving my right ovary. I have started have bright red blood in my stool today. Could this be related to the cyst?

Hi,

Ovarian cyst can lead to severe pain in situations like:
- When the size is increasing in size
- When the cyst underwent torsion
- Rupture of the cyst

Bleeding in stools due to ovarian cyst is rare, unless the size of the cyst is very big leading to pressure on the rectum, in rare cases malignant lesion invading the colon. Other general possibilities for bleeding per rectum are hemorrhoids, fissure in ano, etc. As your doctor mentioned that your ovarian cyst is growing better to undergo definitive treatment by undergoing investigations like CA 125 and CEA to find out the possible nature of the cyst and treatment can be taken accordingly.
Clinical examination, if needed sigmoidoscopy can help in finding the possible cause of bleeding per rectum. So that further management can be planned accordingly.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Sree Gouri S. R., OBGYN
