Is Blood Pressure Of 152/110 A Cause For Concern While On Metoprolol?

Last night my fiance went to the doctor with ndavery high blood pressure (162/92) and was prescribed] Metoprolol. She took one tablet last night, and 12 hours later she was at 152/110. She has just taken her daily dose (25 mg). When should she expect to see some results, and how long should we wait before going back to the doctor if we don t see results? Thanks!

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

As you might know high blood pressure is a chronic disorder. The values you provided are definitive for hypertension and Metoprolol is a drug that acts by decreasing the heart rate and thereby decreasing blood pressure.

If it has been only one dose since treatment then I would say you might have to wait and complete a week course before noting a significant change. Some people even take months to get back to normal. For blood pressure I would suggest you to wait and complete course and follow up if there are any symptoms like dizziness, headache, nose bleed, low heart rate immediately if not after 2 weeks.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Manoj Pradeep
