Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Is Catheter And Valve Surgery Advisable For Aortic Stenosis?
I have severe aortic stenosis, which was just diagnosed last week. A local cardiologist wants me to have a cath and then have the valve surgery asap. I am looking to find the best surgeon in the Cherry Hill, NJ area. Not sure that I trust this doc s opinion, so I am getting a second opinion tomorrow. I am only 60 years old and healthy.
Aortic valve is the valve in the heart that controls the outflow from the left ventricle. There are three cusps in the aortic valve named as right, left and posterior. This is the largest blood vessel in the body which records the systolic pressure. Stenosis of the valves may be due to infection or due to calcium deposition. On stenosis, the movement of the valve is compromised, thus the blood flow to the organs. Symptoms of the aortic valve stenosis depends on the severity of the obstruction.
Echocardiogram, stress test, Chest X-ray, CT scan and MRI of the Heart helps to determine the severity of the disease. Management depends on the level of stenosis, signs and symptoms. Valve repair involves the step to free the movement of the cusps by cutting the stenosis. Balloon catheterization is the procedure for dilating the stenosed valve with balloon catheter. Sometime, it needs valve replacement for permanent cure, in case of severe stenosis.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
