Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My husband has had CLL for 10 years. He presented with hemolytic anemia. Through the years he was treated with prednisone and Rituxin which kept it under control. There was difficulty getting a good bone marrow biopsy due to my husband also having Osteopetrosis. He also has prostate cancer (Gleason 6). Last year he crashed. They were finally able to get a bone marrow biopsy done and a bone biopsy done (confirmed osteopetrosis) and he had a rating of 9.5. He was put through six months of chemo (betamustine (spelt)) ending last June 29 which left him 60 lbs lighter and with chemo brain. In November he got shingles and then a sinus infection but didn t mention these things to his oncologist (!!!!!!). This month he went in for his three month blood work and obviously he crashed. Hemo 6.6, platelets 18. Bone marrow biopsy done again. 100% bone marrow compromised. Waiting on rating. Started on Imbruvica yesterday. White count up today to 12. Question...all through this disease we ve been given an open ended prognosis. I am extremely stressed out and don t know if I should hope or face reality but I don t know what reality to expect...not even a general idea. I can t ask doctor in front of my husband. Can you guide me?
CLL has a very indolent course. The disease responds to chemotherapy in most of the cases. However, the disease also has a chance to progress to more aggressive disease.
In your husband's case, the presence of shingles suggests an immunocompromised state and this can be a problem in recovering from the disease.
The prognosis of the disease will depend on how well the response to chemotherapy is achieved.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
