Is Cough A Contagious Disease?

I am coughing a lot and suspect I may have bronchitis. Am wondering if its contagious as a friend has/had bronchitis and coughed near me. when i try to lay flat to go to sleep it is very hard to breathe. Am a military veteran but no emergency services nearby, only West LA 9.5 miles away approximately. Very scary whats happening to me. If I elevate my head it is slightly easier to breathe and am able to cough less. Have no car to drive to the VA as mine was stolen. Am 76 years old, male, with no prior history of breathing problems. Am wondering if I ll wake up in the morning. Problem may be due to inhaling cigar smoke where I hang out with my friends socially. Think I better stop going there until I feel better!

@ Cough is usually air borne component via droplets inhaled from the
exhaled components of other patient , so in some way it is contagious .
@ According to your narration there is definite constriction of your bronchi ,
you need to get examined by expert Physician for evaluation .
