Is Cough, Runny Nose, Mild Fever With Swollen And Red Eyelid In A Child Concerning?
Hi my granddaughter is 2, she has had a cough just started a runny nose, the problem she has a mild fever this morning and all of a sudden her eyelid has become very red and swollen, has a virus flared up and possibly set in her eye..it is winter and no new pollens or new foods introduced to her. when does she need to go see a doctor? should they give her a childrens dose of ibuprofen or a antihistamine and apply cold compresses to the eye?
Hi ! Good morning. I am Dr Shareef answering your query. Even though most of the URTI (upper respiratory tract infection) are of viral origin to start with, it can get a super added bacterial infection anytime specially in case of a child of this age. If the cold and fever does not subside soon, then you may have to see a paediatrician for an opinion. The redness in the eye could either be due to a concomitant viral or a bacterial conjunctivitis. For this, you can continue cold compress and regular washing of the eyes, but the child has to be seen by your family physician/paediatrician for a prescription of any antiseptic eye drops.
I hope this information would help you in discussing with your family physician/treating doctor in planning the treatment. Thanks for using the health care magic forum for your query on health. Wishing your grand daughter an early recovery. Dr Shareef.
