Hello, i have had a cold for a few days. I am taking Roxithromycin. I am starting to cough up phlem (which i suppose is a good thing because it is getting rid of the infection) however I noticed this morning a very small amount of blood in that mucus. Should I be concerned?
Hello As you mentioned that initially there was cold , then started cough with phlegm . Duration of cold and cough with phlegm is not mentioned as this was an important parameter for diagnosis purposes . Now blood in mucus ( phlegm i.e expectoration or mucus ) present ( streak form ).The blood in mucus or expectoration is known as hemoptysis . Although there are so many reasons of hemoptysis , few of them are , these include: 1 Upper airways ( nasopharyngeal ) bleeding due to any forceful cough or sore throat . Diagnosis can be confirmed by physical examination by a clinician . 2 Tuberculosis , as this is most common cause . Diagnosis can be confirmed by sputum examination for A F B , blood for E S R , c b c, X ray chest pa view. 3 Cancer in lungs is another one such cause . Diagnosis can be confirmed by M R I of lungs . However there are so many other reasons of hemoptysis as mitral stenosis , bleeding disorder . In my opinion consult a pulmonologist and get his opinion. Hope this will help you.
