Is Drinking Chamomile Tea Safe While On Xarelto And Metoprolol?

Hello, I have been taking Xarelto for about two years now and for the last few evenings have been drinking a cup of chamomile tea before bedtime. I was wondering if this is safe? I am 61 yo and had a triple cabg at the age of 49. I also take Metoprolol, Furosemide, Allopurinol, Klor-Con, Rosuvastatin, Folic Acid, and Levothyroxin. Thank you.

Hello!
Welcome to HealthcareMagic!

It's not safe drinking chamomile tea while on Xarelto.
'Although chamomile found in the herbal tea has been used to calm anxiety and settle stomach ailments. However, it contains a small amount of Coumarin which may have very mild blood thinning effects, but usually just in high doses for long periods of time.
Xarelto (Rivaroxaban) is used to prevent blood clot formation due to irregular heartbeats (atrial fibrillation) or deep vein thrombosis (DVT) which can lead to blood clots in the lungs (pulmonary embolism).
Since chamomile contains a small amount of Coumarin ("blood thinner") so drinking the chamomile containing herbal tea while on Xarelto may increase the risk of bleeding, including severe and sometimes fatal hemorrhage. Had I been your treating doctor I would not have advised you to drink chamomile tea as long as you take Xarelto.
You should seek immediate medical attention if you experience any unusual bleeding or bruising, red or black stools; coughing up or vomiting fresh or dried blood that looks like coffee grounds.
There's no documented harmful interaction of chamomile with other prescribed drugs mentioned in your query.
Hope I could answer your queries.

Wishing you best of your health.

A feed back is appreciated.

Take Care!
