Is Exposure To Halothane And Isofluorane Harmful For Person With Hyperthermia History?
Hi, I'm a veterinary student with a family history of Malignant Hyperthermia. I have spoken to an anesthesiologist as I had surgery with no complications over 3 years ago and was told not to worry. I work with large animals (horses, cows) and halothane is still used for them, isofluorane is used in small animal. Should I be worried about exposure to expelled gas during recovery of large animals as they recover from the anesthetic?

Hello doctor, If I am your treating doctor I advice you that having history of hypothermia and exposure to halo thane and isofluorane is harmful as it causes hyperthermia. Because this gas are volatile whenever the animal under anesthesia is recovering from it they exhales some amount of this gaseous agent in air. And you accidentally inhales this gas. This makes you at risk of having hyperthermia. So in my advice you should avoid such a situation. thanks for your contact if you have any other questions than contact me. Dr. Arun Tank
