Is It OK To Ask A Surgeon To Have Mercy On A Drug User ?
Doctors: Is it OK to ask a surgeon to have mercy on a drug user ? A young man has his second case of endocarditis and illegal drug in his system. The doctors are not showing much mercy or interest in his case (understandably). Is it silly or ok if I write a letter to the head surgeon and ask for his healing hands once again...and promise that this kid will NOT be back with the same problems/addictions ? Will the doc even read this letter, or will it make him angry, as I am putting him in an difficult situation ? Thanks.
All Doctors take an oath to first do no harm so you don't have to worry about the Dr not doing his/her job. As far as you making a promise that is only his to make, that is a mistake on your part. You can't make a drug user stop until he wants to any more than you can make a horse drink water, he has to want to so don't make promises you can't keep and the Dr will keep his/her promise of doing no harm, they have to honor their oath or lose their licenses.
