Is It Advisable To Cease Blood Pressure Medications On Feeling Lethargic?

When , or would a doctor tell a patient not to take their blood pressure if they felt lethargic? My nephew ,from another state, withheld his 88 year old mother s medication for three days because she was lethargic. He stated that the doctor said not give it to her if she was overly tired. It is my understanding that if a person has been diagnosed with high blood pressure they should never stop taking their medication unless they were prescribed another medication.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

When a patient is diagnosed with high blood pressure and feels lethargy, tired or fatigued, it may be indicative of symptoms of heart or kidney damage as a result of high blood pressure. Feelings of tiredness may also be linked to hypertension medications, lifestyle, or coexisting conditions like inadequate sleep, overexertion, stress, lack of exercise, improper nutrition, etc.

It may also be a side-effect of medication or caused by an interaction between medications and alcohol. Sometimes, a person may feel lethargic due to low blood pressure or low blood glucose. In such conditions follow the instruction of the treating doctor and get a follow up clinical examination done at the earliest to assess the patients condition, so that treatment can be started.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
