Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Is It Common To Have No Pain After Removing Anal Canal, Closing Rectum And Colostomy?
I just had my anal canal removed and rectum closed. I already have a colostomy.
Couple of weird things, I have hardly had any pain at all from this surgery, just wondering if that is common and why? And also it feels as though there is some sort of "packing" at the rectum. Just wondering what to expect with this?
Outer part of anal canal (somatic) is extremely pain sensitive whereas rectum and inner anal canal (visceral) are not. As long as external skin over anal canal is not injured, you feel little or no pain after surgery. visceral pain is often dull pain that can be nagging and diffuse (just like your 'packing') and is less bothersome.
