Is It Dangerous To Have Mucosal Thickening?

I have a history of having allergies (i.e. I sneeze and get a runny nose if the weather outside changes). For the past 2 months I started to get headaches stretching from left temple to the right and in the middle of my forehead. I would take Tylenol, Excedrin, or Advil, but they really wouldn't go away. A recent CT showed that I have mucosal thickening with mucus present in the left maxillary sinus. The same thickening along the inferior aspect of the right sphenoid sinus. Plus partial opacification of bilateral ethmoid sinuses due to the mucosal thickening. Bilateral mastoid air cells are normally aerated. Do I have sinisitus? Is this the cause of my headaches? What remedies are available to alleviate the mucosal thickening and get me back to normal? I also heard that this is not a very serious condition but I am still concerned. Thank you.

Hello,

Thank you for asking at HCM.

I went through your history and would like to make following suggestions for you:

1. Yes, having headaches and mucosal thickening in sinuses, I would first think of sinusitis. Sinusitis is usually result of infection or log standing nose allerigies. Apart from nose symptoms, it can also cause headaches, post-nasal drip (feeling of mucous trickling into throat), recurrent throat clearing, etc.

2. In patients with sinusitis with mucosal thickening, I usually suggest intranasal corticosteroids and combination of levocetirizine and montelukast for at least 14 days.

3. Regular steam inhalation twice a day and regular saline irrigation of nose cavity are a very useful simple remedies for long-standing sinusitis. It helps to drain the mucous from sinuses and recovery of mucosa. However, it has to continued at least for 14-28 days and please be cautious to avoid burns.

4. I always suggest my such patients to take plenty of warm fluids during the day and avoid exposure to dusts, smokes and air pollution as much as possible.

5. I would also suggest you allergy testing to identify the allergy causing substances.

6. I would agree that it is not a serious condition but appropriate changes in diet, environment and life style can control it progressing. Sinusitis is a chronic condition and the more chronic it becomes, it can become difficult to treat and it requires longer treatments. Hence I would appreciate your efforts to know about the condition.

Hope above suggestions will be helpful to you.

Should you have any further query, please feel free to ask at HCM.

Wish you the best of the health ahead and a very good recovery.

Thank you & Regards.
