Is It Necessary To Fix Pelvic Prolapse? Can It Lead To Bigger Problems?

Hi, Im a 44 year old relatively healthy woman .One year ago last month, I was release from the hospital after being admitted to have a hysterectomy and mesh lift to repair a Rectocele and an endocele as well as a bladder sling also of mesh. The surgery was done via DiVinci, and I was expected to be home within 24 hours. I hemmoraged during surgery, and the 1 &1/2 hr surgery ended up being 6+ hours and my stay in the hospital for this first issue was 5 days and several more blood transfusions. Although I was insistent that I hadn t emptied my bowel or bladder, I was released only to return to the Emergency room within 12 hours, terribly distended, internally bleeding as stitches were pulling loose and I also had an Ilius (is that correct, my digestive system shut down. That night I had my second surgery to restitch the vaginal cuff that had torn, followed by several more blood transfusions. Over the next 27 days my health continued to decline, an I ended up with a massive infection in my belly, the name is escaping me now. I had several preventive radiology procedures with drains inserted, the result was worsening infection and blood counts. When I continued to decline I was taken into emergency surgery in which they final opened me up, removed all of the mesh, except for the bladder sling, power washed the infection and attempted to once again repair the vaginal cuff and re-repair the Rectocele & endocele. Again I remained in the hospital for many days to receive more blood transfusions, antibiotics and with my bad luck contract a contagious intestinal virus. Just last month I hit the 1 year anniversary. I m not back to a work out regime, as I used to ride my bike daily 10-15 miles. I ve suffered in one way or another for the entire year and now I can no long deny that the Rectocele and endocele are worse than they were before the first surgery, with low back pain, occasional pain during intercourse and always needed to guide the feces to my rectum by inserting my fingers into my vagina. In general my health is not good, I ve only had a handful of days in ten years in which I would rather do anything than be asleep. Convinced that being on Narcotic pain medicines where to blame for many of my symptoms I had my Doctor wean me off of them and I don t feel any better, just have more pain. My most urgent question at this moment is whether fixing my pelvic prolapse problems is elective or can it quickly become a larger problem? As you may imagine, Im terrified to have a surgery of any sort. Thank you for your thoughts and consideration! Sincerely, Jill Heritier YYYY@YYYY

Hi Jill,
Felt sorry after reading the tragic events. Regarding your question, fixing pelvic prolapse problems is elective & its unlikely to become a larger problem in short time. You can take time, be physically & mentally prepared, & then go for the treatment.
Wish you good health.
Regards.
