Is It Normal For A 5 Week Old Baby Not Having Bowel Movement For 54 Hours?
I have a 5 week old baby. From the time of birth he had multiple bowel movements a day. He has not had a bowel movement in approximately 54 hours now. He is on both formula and breastmilk. Is it normal for them to go that long without having one? At what point should I take him in to the pediatrician? Thank you.
Hi, Thanks for asking query on health care magic. Babies should pass motion within 24 hours of birth. Once the first motion is passed then they may pass 7-10 motions daily. Some times they may not pass motion continuously for 2-3 days even up to one week. As long as the baby is normal ,no abdominal distension, taking feeds normally ad playing without crying, you need not worry. Hope this answer will serve your purpose. Please feel free to ask any more queries if required. Take care Dr.M.V.Subrahmanyam MD; DCH. Associate professor of pediatrics, MIMS.
