Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Is It Normal To Have Abdomen Cramps Before The First Menstruation?
My 11 year old daughter is showing signs of her first period starting very soon. Breast development, hair growth, and discharge. She also has been getting some cramps the last few months that make her feel nauseated and she describes the pain in the same area usually related to menstrual cramps...near ovaries. She has struggled with being regular since a toddler, but this seems a bit different. Is it common to have some cramps in months leading up to first period starting?
hello and welcome to HCM, Cramps usually occur fwe hours and few days before onset of menstrual cycles. Cramps ongoing for couple of months can be due to some other cause. The signs of onset of puberty have set in but the cramps can be unrelated to the puberty or onset of menstrual cycles. I suggest you to consult your primary healthcare provider for imaging study (ultrasonography) of lower abdomen and pelvis. In case any abnormality relating to reproductive organs is detected you need to consult a gynaecologist. In case other abdominal organs are involved, you need to consul;t your surgeon.
Thanks and take care Dr Shailja Puri
