Is It Normal To Have Dizziness And Vertigo Post Neck Discectomy Surgery?

I had neck discectomy surgery (C5/6) on 2/26/2015. Past few nights I ve had some dizziness/vertigo when turning on my side in bed. Just talking to my surgeon s nurse who is going to relay this tomorrow. I m just wondering if this happens after this type of surgery. I did not have any dizziness, just neck / back pain before surgery.

Hello,

Regarding your complaint dizziness / vertigo on turning to a side in bed, these are the probable causes:
1) Many patients experience dizziness or balance disturbances in long term after cervical disc surgery. There is a study indicating this though the exact % is not known, quite good proportion of post operative patients after 10 yrs of surgery experienced dizziness.
2) BPPV meaning benign paroxysmal positional vertigo that occurs due to disturbance in inner ear and is characterized by vertigo on turning the head.
3) Vertebral artery insufficiency leading to lowered blood circulation and dizziness
4) High grade carotid stenosis.
5) Some forms of nystagmus

The above causes are to be ruled out only by clinical examination and testing. Anyway you will be meeting your surgeon's nurse. Please explain your symptoms in detail and ask her to report to surgeon.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
