Is It Normal To Have Hiccups During End Stage Liver Failure?

Hi, my husband is 34yo is has end stage liver failure and in the last 48 hours suffered with severe hiccups. Last night they last for 5 hours. They are very distressing to him and I don't know if they would be doing more damage. Is this normal? What causes this?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Liver failure and ascitis can cause hiccups. It is due to increase intra-abdominal pressure and also due to accumulation of toxic metabolites by damaged liver. You can give him Baclofen tablets twice a day for symptomatic relief. If hiccups persist, consult his physician and evaluated.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
