Is it okay to take diovan for bp if you normally take atenolol to get your bp down?

My parents are on vacation and my father packed the wrong bp medication. His bp is a little high today because he only takes medication every other day or so... He brought the wrong medication... can this Diovan help him until he can get his correct medication filled tomorrow at a pharmacy?

Hi friend,
Welcome to Health Care Magic

Stopping atenolol (beta blocker) can cause rebound of heart rate and blood pressure.
He should try to get it and take / it is easily available...It should be tapered gradually, if he decides to change..
Diovan is a good drug and acts by different mechanism..

Take care
Wishing speedy recovery
God bless
Good luck

Internal Medicine Specialist Dr. Akhilesh Dubey's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for using Healthcaremagic,
After going through the details, He is hypertensive and takes Atenolol, for control of blood pressure this is Beta Blocker drug.
Diovan is Valsartan which is a ARB( Angiotensin receptor blocker),I would not recommend to give another drug in place of Atenolol, please arrange same drug if possible .
If it is absolutely not possible to arrange then he can wait till his medicine is available.
Atenolol is widely available drug.
Hope this helps.
Take care.
Good Luck.
