Is It Possible To Get Shingles In Spite Of Being Vaccinated Against Shingles?

I got the shingles vaccine about 2 years + ago, and I am wondering can I still get shingles and if so what are the symptoms. I have severe pressure in my middle back, and a sensitive spot that when touched is very sensitive. When at it s peak, it radiates down into my leg and up into my shoulder. This is on my right side, I went to a doctor here, and she took xrays (thoracic spine - 3 views), they were negative for thoracic compression fracture or malalignment, but there was evidence of mild diffuse thoracic spondylosis. The doctor determined that I have shingles, but I have no evidence of a rash, blistering or anything of that nature. Please advise...as I don t want to be waiting around for the rash, blistering, etc., as so far I have experience pain that feels like a stick is poked into my back (a pressure sensation)?, if this is something else I should be checking on. Thank You,

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Usually, it is really difficult to diagnose a case of shingles without rashes just on the basis of your symptoms. Usually the rash appears 1-5 days after the appearance of pain or feeling of burning. However, the test of blood or saliva may be able to identify the presence of VZV antibodies. Usually the effect of shingle shot lasts for about 5 years, but in very few cases shingle can be present even after shingle vaccination during this period. Definitely, the symptoms are usually mild to moderate in such cases.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
