Is It Right Decision To Have A Surgery For Testicular Torsion In An Infant?

I have a 3 month old son who has a testicular torsion and is scheduled for surgery in 2 weeks. As a mother I am very concerned for him and if this is the right thing to do for him to save the other testical. I am wondering if 3 months is too young for thus surgery to be performed!? What are the risks? Will he be in pain ? Can he really have a normal sex life when be becomes an adult? Do you think he is better off waiting till he is older for the surgery? Is it really necessary to stitch down the other testicle? What do you recommend to your patients this young

Hello,
I had gone through your query and understand your concern.

If I were the treating doctor of your baby, I would have recommended the same treatment.

But relax. It is not a risky operation. Your baby will not have pain during surgery as it is done under anaesthesia. Your child may have some pain after surgery which can be managed with mild analgesic drugs.

Testicular torsion means abnormal twisting of testes. When testes get twisted the blood vessels supplying blood to testes will also get twisted cutting the supply of blood to testes. This is an emergency condition. So, my answer is NO, you cannot wait till he gets older to get him operated.

Based on the condition of testes your child may need a simple re-twisting of testes to normal position if the condition of testes is good. If the condition is bad, doctors may consider to remove the affected testes. In either case, your son with one or both testes can have normal sexual life.

Hope I answered your questions.

If You have any other queries, feel free to ask.

Regards,
Dr.Prathap Kumar
