Is It Safe For Children To Be Around A Patient Undergoing External Radiation Treatment For Cancer?
Is it safe to be around someone who just had an external radiation treatment a few hours ago for breast cancer--and for my 2yr olds? I've heard some conflicting info--Are they emitting any radiation--and is this a known fact--has it been thoroughly tested? because I've heard there is no safe levels of radiation--thanx Kelly
Hello.. I am Dr Adil. Thank you for asking question. Radiations are dangerous. So children shouldn't be brought to the radiation department. A patient who has received external radiations (as in your case) is safe once she is brought out of the radiation department. She doesn't emit radiations. So it is safe to bring children around her.
A patient who has received pharmaceutical radioactive iodine or an internal radiation implant may possess some danger to others. They need to follow some instructions and Take precautionary measures to avoid that danger.
But as your patient has received external radiation so you shouldn't worry. She doesn't emit radiations.
