Is It Safe To Breast Feed While Having Pus Filled Blister On Areola?

I had a pimple on my areola. My baby is 5 months old and I am breast feeding. So it popped as she was feeding and I did stop feeding her on that side. But now the once pimple is more like a hole! A yellow/white pus came out followed by watery blood. Is it ok to feed her later today on that side as long as nothing is coming out of the once pimple?

Hello,

It seems you are having a nipple abscess. Please don't breast feed on that side. Take antibiotics like tab. Amoxicillin with clavulanic acid 500mg thrice daily for 5 days. If you also have fever, use tab. Acetaminophen 500mg 6th hourly.

Keep the area dry and clean. You can use Povidine iodine for cleaning the pus. Once the pus stops and the abscess gets regressed, you can start breastfeeding on that side. If your symptoms don't relieve with the above treatment, please go see a gynecologist or a physician for further evaluation.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
