Is It Safe To Change Antihistamine To Benadryl?

Have had sinus drainage with cough and congestion in chest for 6 weeks. Went to Dr. Last week and not in my lungs. Been taking chlorphenamine and mucinex with some vicodin . Drainage and what I expectorate is thin and clear to yellow. No fever. Just can t get it to stop draining. Should I change the antihistamine to benadryl?

Hi,

Benadryl contains diphenhydramine which is a first generation antihistaminic acts against H1 receptors in the bronchial smooth muscles, capillaries, intestinal muscles. It inhibits the histamine and helps to cure allergic rhinitis, hay fever, common cold, vomiting, motion sickness, etc. It helps in bronchodilatation, prevents vasodilation thereby preventing nasal congestion and runny nose.

Guaiphenesin is a mucolytic which helps in mucus congestion either in the sinuses or in the bronchial airways. Steam inhalation, or humidifier or vaporizer may be used for improving the sinus drainage. Discuss with the physician for further management.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
