Is It Safe To Continue With Coreg For This EF Result?

My EF was expressed as 40 - 50 %. I m 75, and have been taking Coreg for about 18 months. I m otherwise in excellent condition, with completely normal panel, workout routine, weight. My Dr. says this program is to attempt to return function to normal. What are my odds?

Hi,

Coreg (carvedilol) is a medication used to treat heart failure and hypertension by reducing the workload on the heart and lowering blood pressure. It is generally safe and effective when used as prescribed by a healthcare provider. Regarding your ejection fraction (EF) result, an EF of 40-50% indicates mild to moderate reduction in heart function. The goal of treatment is to improve heart function and quality of life. Coreg is a common medication used in heart failure patients to achieve this goal.

The odds of improving heart function depend on various factors, including the underlying cause of heart failure, the severity of the condition, the duration of the condition, and other medical conditions. In general, people who follow a treatment plan that includes medications, lifestyle modifications (such as a heart-healthy diet, exercise, and smoking cessation), and regular monitoring have a better chance of improving heart function.

It is important to continue taking Coreg as prescribed by your healthcare provider. Stopping the medication abruptly can be harmful and may lead to worsening heart function.

General & Family Physician Dr. Albana Sejdini's  Response
Hello,

It is generally safe to continue taking Coreg (carvedilol) for a mildly reduced ejection fraction (EF) of 40-50%. Coreg is a medication commonly used to treat heart failure and can improve heart function by reducing the workload on the heart and improving blood flow.

Your doctor may have prescribed Coreg to help improve your heart function and prevent further decline. With regular monitoring and management of any underlying conditions, such as hypertension or diabetes, you may be able to maintain or even improve your EF.

However, it is important to continue to follow up with your doctor and have regular assessments of your heart function, as well as any potential side effects of Coreg, such as low blood pressure or dizziness. Your doctor may also recommend lifestyle changes, such as a heart-healthy diet and exercise program, to help support your heart health.

Overall, your individual prognosis will depend on many factors, including your overall health, any underlying conditions, and how well you respond to treatment. It is important to work closely with your healthcare team to manage your condition and maintain your heart health.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Albana Sejdini, General & Family Physician
