Is It Safe To Give Flucloxacillin To Treat Swelling Of Left Clavicle?

My 2 year old son has some swelling to his left clavicle. It s warm to touch and slightly red. He has full rom of the left arm, but is guarding it. He doesn t complain of pain when I touch the swelling, but he cries when I mention getting dressed. We have been given a 7 day course of flucloxacillin and are currently on day 1 with no improvement in symptoms. He has no fever/temperature and seems completely normal in himself apart from not using his left arm.Is it likely a form of cellulitis? Or could it be a missed fracture?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

It is difficult to diagnose the cause of the swelling without a physical examination and further tests. However, if your son has been prescribed Flucloxacillin, it may be due to a bacterial infection. Flucloxacillin is an antibiotic commonly used to treat bacterial infections such as cellulitis. It is important to complete the full course of antibiotics as prescribed by your doctor, even if your son's symptoms improve before the end of the course.

If your son's symptoms do not improve after completing the course of antibiotics, or if they worsen, you should consult your doctor again for further evaluation and management. Your doctor may recommend further tests such as an X-ray or an ultrasound to rule out any other underlying conditions, such as a fracture or abscess.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
