Is It Safe To Have A Screw Through Vertebrae?

I had a spinal fusion done 4 mths ago. A CAT scan just revealed that there is a small amount of graft material protruding posteriorly into the anterior central canal. Would this have happened during surgery? How can it be fixed?I also have a screw that is through the body of the vertebrae, is this normal?
