Is It Safe To Take Cefaclor And Cefdinir For Chronic Strep Throat?

I am a 30 year old male living in China. I am in a difficult situation, I currently have no extra money to use to go to see a doctor, but I am quite certain I have a fairly acute case of strep throat. Symptoms of the infection first became noticeable approximately 4-5 days ago, but have intensified significantly in the last 24 hours. I do not have the money to purchase a commonly prescribed antibiotic for strep treatment, but I do have a few antibiotics in my possesion which are active against strep strains. I have 0.1875g sustained-release cefaclor capsules and 0.1g cefdinir capsules. My question to you is in your medical opinion which of the antibiotics would be more practical to use as treatment, and what approximate dosage should I take.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Injectable penicillins or amoxicillin are the preferred antibiotics to treat strep throat because they are safer, inexpensive and work well on strep bacteria. However Cefaclor as well as cefidinir are also effective for this infection. Cefaclor is given in the dose of 250 to 500 mg orally every 8 hours whereas cefidinir in the dose of 300 mg orally every 12 hours is effective and should be taken for 10 days.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
