Is It Safe To Take Cortisone Shot For Pain In Intercostal Muscle?

My son is 17 years old, and pulled an intercostal muscle or bruised a rib. The x-ray showed no cracks or breaks. He is playing tackle football for his varsity high school team and has regular treatments of ice and wears additional protection during practice and games. Would a cortisone shot to the effected area increase tolerance to the pain and help mask the pain while the area heals?
