Is It Safe To Take Metformin For Fluctuating Sugar Levels?
I am about 70 years old diabetic and take metforman 500 Mgms twice a day.Recently I was checked in a lab for sugar and My HbbA1C is found to be 7.3% as against required 6.2 or so and my fasting sugar level is 112mg/dL as aginst reqd of 100 or so.Should I change my medicine from Metaformin or increase the dosage to control the Sugar.?Hameed A Sheikh
Well! Although FBS is 112 mg/dL , which appears to be slightly raised but the fact that your HbA1c is 7.3 which is suggestive of uncontrolled diabetes. HbA1c reflects the level of glucose level of past three months & it is quite sensitive & specific. You can take Metformin 500 mg three times a day & recheck your bood glucose after 2 weeks & HbA1c after 3-4 months.
Best regards!
