Is It Safe To Take Nitrofurantoin During Pregnancy?
Hi, I am 39 weeks pregnant right now and have been prescribed Nitrofurantoin 100mg. But ai have read over the internet that this medicine is not safe in the last weeks of pregnancy since it may destroy red blood cells in baby.My doctor says it is safe to use this medicine. Please suggest.
Hi Thanks for your query. I appreciate your concern for the safety of Nitrofurantoin during pregnancy.
As per FDA pregnancy it is a category "B" drug.
It is contraindicated at term (38 to 42 weeks gestation), during labor and delivery, and when onset of labor is imminent. Contraindicated because of possibility of hemolytic anemia (breakdown of the red blood cells) due to immature erythrocyte enzyme systems.
Hope this answers your query.
