I am 22 weeks pregnant. I have had an issure with a hiatal hernia in the past and I am pretty positive that this is what I am experiencing now. I am getting bad acid reflux, Below my rib cage sticks out if I bend over or sit up and I m having trouble catching a breath. This has been going on for a couple days. Is it safe to take prilosec to get rid of it while pregnant? I am 28, 170, crohns. 2nd child in 8 years.
Hello, and I hope I can answer your question today.
It is not unusual to have acid reflux just from being pregnant, and if you have a hiatal hernia and it was not surgically corrected it is very likely to become more symptomatic.
The safest medication to take for acid reflux or similar problems during pregnancy is Pepcid (Famotidine) which has been well studied for safety. o recommend that as an alternative to Prilosec, which is in a different medication class which is less studied. You should take around 20 milligrams a day (two over-the-counter pills) and it should help you within a week or so. Also try to sleep as upright as possible and also do not lie down until at least 2 hours after meals.
I hope this advice was helpful and that you feel better.
Best wishes for the rest of the pregnancy, Dr. Brown
