Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Is It Safe To Take Suboxone While Taking Xanax For Anxiety?
I have currently been prescribed suboxone, and i also take xanax for anxiety which is the only medication that is really helping me with anxiety would there be any problems or serious interactions with these 2 medications being administered also I have insomnia and have also been taking zanaflex 4mg & Trazadone 150mg for help with sleep along with taking OTC PMs. would i have any serious problems with these meds taking my suboxone.
The effect of the SUBOXONE + XANAX is really with the sedation effects. I work in the Drug and Alcohol field, so this is one of the cardinal rules that we follow, opiates and benzodiazepines are not to be used at the same time. The Suboxone is great for many uses, and it does have what is called a ceiling effect, in that it even at high doses can only cause so much suppression of your breathing.
Now adding Xanax and even the Zanaflex on this will push that sedation and decrease your breathing even further if added to the Suboxone (Zanaflex is not that bad but still has some effect). Now there is no chemical interaction between the two but there is a cumulative effect on sedation and suppressing respirations.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
