Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Is It Safe To Take Xarelto To Treat AFib In An Elderly Person?
My 85 year old mom had a stroke on 04/23/15 and @ the same time was diagnosed with a fib, for the 1st time in her life. Never any heart palpatations or heart concerns of any kind. Since 04/23/15, she has had 3 additional strokes, presumably caused by the a fib. Would Xarelto be a good medicinal choice for her?
Xarelto contains rivaroxaban that is used to decrease the chance of deep vein thrombosis or DVT, pulmonary embolism and blood clots in patients who have a medical condition known as atrial fibrillation which isn't caused by a heart valve problem. It is a safe and effective medication for atrial fibrillation, if it is taken in the dose and duration as directed by the prescribing doctor.
This medication can help to lower the chance of having a stroke by preventing clots from forming. If someone stop taking this medication without consulting his or her doctor, then he or she may have increased risk of developing a clot in the blood. Despite having any side effect, someone should continue this medication.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
