Is It Safe To Take Accutane (amnesteem) With A Cavernous Malformation?
My son has a cavernous malformation in his brain. He was just prescribed accutane (amnesteem) for his acne. In the pamphlet enclosed with the medication there is a warning that the drug can cause pressure in the brain. How serious is this and can it be taken with a cavernous malformation? Thanks!
Accutane (isotretinoin) can cause benign intracranial hypertension in some patients. The symptoms include headache, nausea, vomiting, visual disturbances. The drug has to be stopped immediately if the above symptoms occur. This condition usually happens when used along with tetracyclines. A cavernous malformation as such is not a contraindication for Accutane's use. But may have to be avoided in a severe symptomatic malformation. It is unlikely that your son's cavernous malformation will be affected by Accutane's use if the malformation is not severe and asymptomatic. You can consult your neurologist for further information. I hope the above information helps you. Thanks for writing into healthcaremagic.
