Is It Safe To Take Coumadin/warfarin For Blood Clots?

I am hoping you can help clarify some questions. I have been taking warfarin/coumadin for at least 10 years and have always had it under control never a problem. Dec. 27, 2013 I was put on Glimepiride 2 mg for diabetes. Jan 21. 2014 my INR was tested at 3.5, today it tested at 4.2. My blood is too thin and The Dr. instructed me to stop the warfarin for 2 days, eat lots of spinach and come in Thurs. for another test. I have always been told that Greens - K vitamins, thicken the blood ...correct? Is this the right course of action? I take coumadin/warfarin because my blood clots..particular to me. I am allergic to penicillin, sulfa, niacin...I am aware that Glimepiride has a small amount, but hasn t bothered me...other drugs in this category are highly allergic for me. Thank you

Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this rising INR levels. The recent rise in the numbers show that either there is something in your diet or drugs is responsible for this. There are two approaches to this, may be to switch you off the glimepiride that coincides with this rising numbers and see whether it returns to normal. If it should, then your doctor may want to use a different drug to address your diabetes. However, if it shouldn't, then it may just be time for your dosage to be reduced. it is easier to manipulate the dosage of your drug than your diet. After eating all what the doctor recommended, should the test return normal, would you be able to live like that all your life? The answer is no. I will suggest that your doctor should rather try to adapt the dosage to every other changes and not otherwise because of the difficulty to manipulate the other aspects.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Thanks for using our services and feel free to request for more information. Thanks.
